Named after the great Italian sinologist, Matteo Ricci, the Ricci Institute was founded in 1966 by the Chinese Province of the Society of Jesus. The purpose of the Institute is the study of important topics in Chinese culture, both ancient and modern. In the first 40 years of its existence the Institute placed special emphasis on Chinese lexicography, religions and society.

Matteo Ricci Institute for the Relations with the East
The Matteo Ricci Institute is a nonprofit research center. The Institute is the expression of an association made up of the following private and public organizations: Macerata Municipality, Macerata Province, Macerata University, Macerata Diocese, Marche Region. For particular events (e.g. "Macerata 2010"), the Matteo Ricci Institute is supported by the Carima Foundation and Macerata Chamber of Commerce.
