Tuesday 19th October, 2010

In the last few days, Master Clockmaker Alberto Gorla's reproduction of the mechanical clock, given by Matteo Ricci to Emperor Wanli, has returned to Macerata.

The clock which was placed at the entrance of Shanghai Expo's Italian Pavilion attracted and intrigued the thousands of visitors, among whom many celebrities, that since May have been admiring Italy's contribution to the trade fair. The Marche area of the Pavilion was particularly appreciated.

Macerata Town Council, particularly ex-Alderman Giovanni di Geronimo, wished to showcase the town. This was made possible with the support of the Committee for the Celebration of the IV Centenary of the Death of Matteo Ricci and the collaboration of Master clockmaker, Alberto Gorla.

The clock symbolises the cultural bridge between Italy and China, between the West and the East, which has been built as a result of the work of the Jesuit from Macerata, Matteo Ricci, during his 28 years in China. Ricci made the clock to give to Emperor Wanli who was so fascinated by it that he wanted it in the Imperial Palace. He was very taken by the way it struck the hours, by 'the bell that rang on its own' so he made Ricci responsible for keeping it in working order.

The clock will be on show in Macerata at the end of the month in the final exhibition of the year dedicated to Matteo Ricci. This will be held in Palazzo Buonaccorsi and has been organized by Prof. Filippo Mignini on behalf of the Committee for the Celebration of the IV Centenary of the Death of Father Matteo Ricci.
