Friday 26th November, 2010.

A round table on the future prospects of exchange with China closed the conference "The Relevance of Ricci's Teaching in Today's World. Interpretations   Texts   Fortune".  Speakers included Gherardo Gnoli (President of IsIAO Rome, Giorgio Trentin, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at the University of Macerata, Airaldo Piva, Managing Director for Europe of the Hengdian Group, Francesco D'Arelli of IsIAO and Xu Xiaohua, President  of Hengdian Group Linix Motors.

What emerged from the debate was that culture plays a central role in all human activities, including the entrepreneurial sector. It was stressed that culture today is too often seen as only for the few and thus a waste of time and resources but this is not the case as Ricci himself demonstrates.

Of all Ricci's work, what remains above all is culture, its sedimentation over time. This is something that the entrepreneurial class should definitely not ignore but make the centre and driving force of their production. It is therefore very important to encourage cultural contact and exchange among the young.

Vito Avarello from the University of Saint Etienne and Professor Diego Poli from the University of Macerata both spoke on the closing day of the conference. Professor Filippo Mignini wound up the proceedings emphasizing how these three days of study have increased awareness. He pointed out that we get to know a celebrated figure like Matteo Ricci and his historical and cultural complexity through the study and interpretation of his texts. We can only find the real Ricci in his writings.

Mignini also presented "Ten Chapters of a Strange Man" which has just been published in Italian translation by Quodlibet. It was edited by the Ricci Institute as part of the programme of the Ricci centenary celebrations.

Romano Carancini, Mayor of Macerata, closed the conference by thanking the organizers, the speakers and all those who had taken part. He also presented a commemorative plaque to Adriano Ciaffi, Head of the Celebrations Committee, and to Professor Mignini. The Year of Matteo Ricci is over but a new way is opening up in business relations between Italy and China.
